Hola!
A wonderful Monday in Mexico City! We were up around 6:30 am and then up to the Lounge for breakfast about 7:30 am. Back to our suite for a bit, as most sight-seeing things aren’t necessarily open yet.

I wanted to see a good Mexico City Market, so found La Ciudadela, not too far from the Hilton. However, we got there about 8:30-9 am and found that there were only a few shops open. So … we decided to go to the Aquarium Inbursa, the Mexico City aquarium! We ubered there in about 20 minutes, and were dropped off right in front of the city’s private art museum! Just an amazing building!
Into the aquarium just after opening time, and truly, this is a wonderful facility! We generally enjoy seeing local aquariums, but this one was exquisite! Many varieties of fish/sea creatures that we have never seen before! For instance, we saw fish that had developed both arms and legs! Incredible! We also saw a wonderful variety of jelly fish -- I think I’d like to have an aquarium with a jelly fish or two – they’re just like watching a fire or waves wash in on the shore! [I can just imagine asking our neighbors, Bob and Stew, to feed our jelly fish when we go off on our travels. – R] There were several school groups that, of course, were fair to partly noisy, but not too many other folks as we progressed from the ground floor up three levels. Very, very enjoyable!
We popped out the door, and right across the street we saw: COSTCO! Of course, we didn’t have our membership cards, but we decided we wanted to see what the store was like. And truly, it could have been our local Costco! The exact same layout, and many of the same products! They didn’t check membership cards on entry, so we were able to walk about at will; we just couldn’t buy anything. The only thing I REALLY wanted was a 2’ high Stuart minion, but R said he wasn’t going to give up his seat, so I had to leave Stu behind … sigh…
Turns out we were in a lovely shopping mall, and stopped and rested a bit in the local Starbucks. I did find a fun shop where I managed to buy two small purses made in China for me – one was $159 pesos ($8.00 US) and the other was $259 ($12.50 US!). Certainly couldn’t beat the price!
From there, we walked back to the Aquarium where we picked up our Uber, which took us back to the hotel. We managed to get short naps, before we headed back to La Ciudadela, the local market, where this time – surprise! — most of the shops were open! I did find several pairs of earrings to buy, as well as some very simple but colorful place mats! I think they were priced about $58 pesos ($2.90 US) each, and we found 8 that we liked. I wasn’t wild about the napkins, so only got the placemats – I can always use ivory or even paper napkins to match!
We walked back to the hotel and settled down for an hour or so before heading out to GoTan, the Argentinian restaurant for tonight’s dinner. Neither of us were really all that hungry, so this time, instead of ordering their wonderful steaks, we each had the spicy empanadas, followed by their brochette of beef with onion, bacon, red pepper and zucchini. It was wonderful, and we followed it up with a terrific flan!
To be honest, after Oaxaca, neither of us wanted to go anywhere south of San Diego, but a day and a half in Mexico City, and seriously, this is truly a lovely city! So, there is hope for some additional Mexican travel … just not in Oaxaca, that’s for sure!
As we were having dinner, the skies just opened up into a truly incredible downpour!! It was amazing! It must have rained hard for at least half an hour. Fortunately, by the time we were finished with dinner, it had ceased – but was replaced with a beautiful rainbow!! Such is Mexico City!
I’m thinking that it was supposed to start cooling down on Wednesday, but after this big rainfall, I’m thinking it may now start being much cooler. Fortunately, we do have jackets, which I think are going to get some use tomorrow!
As it is Tuesday, and most museums will now be open, we will start with the Museo Anahuacalli, which houses Diego Rivera’s pre-Hispanic collection, as well as the local Diego Rivera mural, which I believe is in the park across the street! So … more tomorrow!
Much love,
m
