And then a day to recover!

Hola!

While it was a bit difficult to calm down enough to get to sleep last night, we were up around 7 this morning … and of course looking for our morning naps very quickly thereafter! We both agreed that we needed a recovery day, so we took it very nice and easy!  After I reluctantly climbed out of my wonderful bathtub, we went upstairs for breakfast.  We also asked the nice young man running the Lounge if there was any chance we could extend our reservation for the next three nights.  Well … not only did he do that for us, we can stay in our wonderful junior suite, AND at the incredibly low price that we got last night!  Definitely what I would call wonderful!  Thank you, Hilton, for all your help!

Today being a Sunday, once again, Juarez, the large street on which our hotel is located was deserted of cars – only bicycles and walkers allowed!  How fun is that?  We also had several football games to fall asleep in front of, and I can honestly say we both did that!  Finally, after the first set of football games was over, we went downstairs and outside to the closest Oxxo (like a 7/11) to get several large bottles of water.  I was in such a state last night that I managed to forget and brushed my teeth with tap water.  Whoops!  So far (knock wood…) all is well, so I am hoping for the best!  (Robert was very concerned that the ham tortaswe had last night at the Oaxaca airport had mayonnaise on them, but again … !)

We also checked with Erik, the amazing concierge, and found out that the young man whose backpack we had last night, had come in about half an hour before to pick it up.  Whew!  We also received several nice emails from AeroMexico thanking us for taking it upon ourselves to contact him and arrange for its safe return.  All in all, everything as it should be!

Robert was feeling a bit peckish by this time, and I suggested we try El Cardenal, one of the hotel’s restaurants.  Tripadvisor rates it #31 of 5,172.  Robert called Erik to find out how to make a reservation, and it turns out, El Cardenal is so popular that they don’t take reservations…but if we came down, say around 4:30 pm, our name might just magically appear on their list! Heaven!!  It’s definitely who you know!

Dinner was truly superb! For starters, we split an order of special tacos.  They came on a plate with freshly made tortillas.  Small, very thin and very lightly cooked beef steaks, with guacamole, cactus and salsa.  Wow! They were wonderful!  For Robert’s main course, he ordered sea bass rubbed with spices and then pouched in paper.  It was excellent!  I ordered their chicken breast (and truly, one of the most tender chicken breasts I have ever eaten!) with a mole verde sauce.  It was wonderful, but so BIG I couldn’t manage to finish it!  For dessert, I had their Tres Leche cake, and Robert had their pumpkin with sugar cane sweetener. All washed down with a bottle of Mexican Sauvignon Blanc!  Wow! And I think the bill came to something like $1480 pesos – or something on the order of $71 US!  We will definitely go back to El Cardenal before we leave town, that’s for sure!

Robert noticed that there was something happening on our street, and with the help of the computer discovered that there was a “Zombie Parade” scheduled for 4:30 pm. Apparently it’s to help get some recognition for the under-represented and marginalized people in Mexico.  We wandered outside from El Cardenal and Robert took a few photographs; still hundreds of people outside milling around!

As we were absolutely stuffed we headed back upstairs and are now comfortably settled in our suite! is, in fact, sleeping soundly on the couch, and I’m hoping I can find tonight’s NFL football game!

More tomorrow – when we will actually do something other than sleep and eat!

Much love,
