Hola from Mexico City!

We made it!

Quick blog tonight, as we’ve been traveling all day and I want very much to go to BED!
Up this morning at the usual time, and I walked at the track and then went to Curves.  Then back to the house to tidy up and do final prep before Bob and Stew picked us up at 11 am.  (I know, very late in the day for us, for sure!)  Quick trip to the airport, and we were through screening (thank you, TSA-Pre-Check!) in no time at all – considering that we’re going carry-on! As it was almost noon when we got through, we decided to have some lunch.  Mexican food at SirVeza’s, which was great!  I had a chicken quesadilla with avocado and bacon, and had a beef quesadilla which he very much enjoyed.  Then just sitting and waiting for the plane to board, which is actually did quite early!  In fact, we took off early, which I didn’t think was possible!

Lots of people out at nearly midnight!

Loved the soccer balls!

This guy was spooky!

This gal was stunning!

The flight was less than two hours to Houston and we were once again on the ground.  We landed at Terminal B and had to head to Terminal E for our connecting flight to Mexico City, which was quite a walk!  We did have lots of time, though, and absolutely no problems at all!  Neither of us had realized how truly HUGE Houston’s airport is – although we should have had some idea, as we changed planes there a couple of years ago when we went Turkish Airlines from Houston to Istanbul!

Boarded our plan to Mexico City on time but – surprise!! – while we did have a plane, we had no pilots!! Had to wait over half an hour, but they did eventually arrive and we finally got on our way.  Again, the flight was just about two hours long, and this plane was much nicer than the first one – more comfortable and larger seats, and definitely a nicer bathroom.  At some point, we may be able to figure out the entertainment system they currently have, but neither of us was particularly interested in either the Wi-Fi or DirecTV, so we did save some money there!

Got to Mexico City almost on time, and deplaned fairly quickly.  Hola Mexico City!  Truly a breeze getting through immigration and customs – SUCH a pleasant change from last spring’s Rome experience!  Also, such a pleasant change NOT having to wait at baggage claim!  We were all set to go!

We chose one of the “official” taxi companies outside of baggage, and paid the $250 (Pesos) to get to our hotel, the Hilton Reforma.  Just out Gate 10 and into a cab!  The ground was wet from rain, and it was probably about 60 degrees, but certainly not unpleasant at all.  It took about 15 minutes to get to the Hilton, which is right downtown.  Checked in about 10:10 pm.  Luckily, as Diamond members of Hilton (again, thank you SOmuch, Hilary Hamlin!!!) we were upgraded to their executive 26thfloor, fairly close to the Executive Lounge. Taken to our lovely room – 2614, large king with stunning bathroom (a FABULOUS bathtub!) and settled in.  As we are going to be here for six nights, everything unpacked and put into its place.  SO glad to report that they actually have drawers and shelves here!!

The one thing I forgot to mention is that we were notified several days ago that Mexico City is undergoing a water shortage from October 31stto November 3rd, due to thorough maintenance of the public water system!  I was a bit concerned about what that would mean, but apparently it only means that we can’t use the pool or the spa – whew! We’ll certainly see how it goes!

Downstairs then and Robert decided he was a bit “peckish” … the hotel’s restaurants were closed, but we were assured that we could get food in the bar.  Which we did!  Started with two glasses of fabulous Santo Tomas wine from Baja – it was a Sauvignon Blanc, and absolutely super!  I then ordered three blue corn soft tacos with sirloin and poblano filling. had their shrimp tacos – we were both very happy!

From there, we headed outside and across the street.  There was some sort of street fair going on, with lots of families including some very small children! – strolling and enjoying the atmospheric Day of the Dead celebrations.  took some pictures and we strolled a bit, then headed back to the hotel and not getting ready for bed.

More tomorrow!
Adios!
